Finca Las Cumbres is located in Limay, Estelí, Nicaragua and run by Walter Jose Picada Perez. Walter’s grandfather initially purchased the farm, which was just a small piece of land. Over time, with the help of his wife, they were able to grow basic grains and sugar cane, as well as raise livestock, purchasing more and more land each year. Walter, who also runs the farm with his three brothers and mother, is now the third generation to work this land.
To produce this quality, they maintain quality agricultural practices, proper fertilization schedules, as well as a plan to prevent diseases that are often found within coffee plantations; all of this while taking into account the preservation of the environment.
The support that he lends to the community is also just as amazing. Many of his workers' main incomes are off the land and the standard interest rates that they can find elsewhere are so high, that they eat into basically all of their profits. Therefore, Walter takes upon himself to not only pay them higher than standard wages— he lends his workers money without interest rates.
Walter recognizes that his success is nothing without the workers on the farm who help contribute to the production of coffee. Great man, great workers, great farm, and great coffee.
The farm is divided into 5 separate lots, all with the names of his aunts, whom little by little he purchased the lots from.
Finca Las Cumbres was chosen as one of the regional winners of B2B Nicaragua in 2019, which makes Walter feel proud that the fruits of his labor are being recognized on an international level.
